Go Fishing without the Fatigue

Why Will Parkinson of Smartfishing UK uses shock mitigation seats
Go Fishing without the Fatigue

When Will Parkinson isn't fighting fires with the UK Fire and Rescue Service, you'll probably find him on the water fighting fish with his team, Smart Fishing UK.

Will is also a passionate supporter of the Firefighter's Charity, a UK nonprofit organization that supports men and women in the line of duty with resources to manage their mental, physical, and social well-being. He and the team raise funding and awareness for this remarkable organization by competing in fishing tournaments. He outfitted his boat with four 3200 X4 shock mitigating helm seats and frequently travel long distances over the water in nearly any condition to get to the fish.

Adventures in Shock Mitigation

Suspension seating makes a difference for Canada-based adventure tour operator
Adventures in Shock Mitigation

After spending nearly a decade as a training officer in the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, the impacts from traveling at high speed on the water caused significant pain and injury to Kevin Smith's back. He's still paying for it today...literally. "I spend thousands and thousands of dollars a year with chiropractors looking after my back," Kevin says.

These days, he's the owner and operator of British Columbia-based Maple Leaf Adventures. Kevin selected shock mitigation seating for his adventure tour business both for passenger comfort and safety as well as his own.

Military Tech Goes Rec

Suspension seating once designed for professional mariners has been adapted for recreational use.
Military Tech Goes Rec

Navies, Coast Guards, and Marine Police Forces increasingly turn to shock-mitigation technology to protect their human assets.  These agencies recognize that arriving at a mission objective is not enough, crews must be fit to fight when they get there.

A special report by the Office of Naval Research indicated that 65% of Special Boat Operators reported mechanical shock injuries, many serious enough to require medical attention.

Switch Up Your Shock Mitigating Seat

How a simple flip of a lever adjusts seat suspension in seconds
Switch Up Your Shock Mitigating Seat

During an offshore mission, it's critical to have the correct suspension stiffness for the conditions and the weight of a rider. The SHOXSPRO isolator is one way to adjust air pressure quickly with a simple lever.Adjustments in damping and rebound are popular because they help customize the ride experience, and this can be done in more than one way.

Nearly all shock mitigating seats are adjustable, but it often requires an air pump and some maneuvering inside the cockpit to achieve the desired air pressure adjustment. Trying to do this in the dark, while wearing gloves, and/or bobbing up and down in the water, can be a nonstarter. It is time-consuming, and in critical deployments the pump may be abandoned, much to the risk of the seat’s occupant. An electric pump may be a viable alternative, though it introduces new complexity and expense.

Meet Allsalt's Chief Scientist

Dr. Tom Gunston explains why it's critical to measure wave impact in real time.
Meet Allsalt's Chief Scientist

Dr. Tom Gunston is the Chief Scientist for Allsalt Maritime tasked with providing data analysis for maritime agencies. Understanding impact exposure, he says, is critical for keeping people safe on the water. If the vessel is equipped with capable suspension seats, what may result is the same harmful exposure in a faster boat. Why? The factor that limits how fast an operator will drive the boat is how much pain he is willing to endure.

Providing good mitigation equipment is part of the solution, but agencies should understand what exposures are like in order to assess them sensibly, then take other measures in terms of boat control, operational training, and boat management to make sure that exposures are actually reduced.
